Whats the best kinds of backdrops to use?

Im a beginner on photography & i wanted to know what type of backdrops are best to use. I already know the size i want i just dont know what kind. & whats the best lighting to use? I know people use those umbrella like things. do i use a black umbrella for a black backround? and white for white? Please help. im going to get stuff in 3 days and i really need help. Oh also BRANDS???
