What's the weather like in Chicago mid September, where to stay, Old Town?

I'm going to Chicago from September 11th-14th. What kind of weather can I expect? bring warm clothes and an umbrella? Also, what is everyone's thoughts on Old Town? I want to spend some time there. Where should I stay in Chicago (what area)?
