Can I bring chairs to the national mall for the fireworks in DC?

I live in the DC area now and I want to take the family to the National Mall for the fireworks on July 4th. it seems a good idea to bring lawn (camping) chairs and umbrellas to sit in the sun as the evening progresses. I know security will likely be tight, but I don't want to arrive only to have to throw my chairs away.
